Publications
Books
My publications include an introductory American government book: We the People. It’s now in the 11th edition.
My other books are research-based studies, which have been funded by the Ford, Markle, Pew, Knight, Carnegie, and National Science foundations:
Informing the News, which makes the case for knowledge-based journalism
The Vanishing Voter, which examines the causes and consequences of electoral participation
Out of Order, which looks at journalists’ role in presidential elections and received the American Political Science Association’s Graber Award as the decade’s best book in political communication
The Mass Media Election, which won a Choice Award and looks at the media’s impact on primary and general elections
The Unseeing Eye, which was one of the first studies of television’s impact on election campaigns and was named by the American Association of Public Opinion Research as one of 50 most influential books of the past half century in public opinion
Other publications
In addition to scholarly articles in journals such as Political Communication and the Journal of Communication, I've written a number of monographs, several in my role as research director at Harvard Kennedy School’s Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy (example: “Young People and News”)
Periodically, I write for the popular media (example: in Politico Magazine: “Teddy Roosevelt Failed to Save the GOP From Its Crazies in 1912: Can John Boehner Do Any Better?”).
I’m also a columnist for The Conversation (example: “The Invisible Primary – number one”).
